My time-line of events to purchasing from the Etsy store:

1. Read initial boingboing review - am interested to find out more. Keep in mind to follow it up
2. boingboing posts and links to chan archive and analytics.
3. Read 4chan thread comments, sample pages etc
4. Follow link to Etsy store AND to free download
5. Am impressed by Steve's response to thread and willingness to engage
6. Purchase signed&sketched copy from store (yes please, of course I will!) and download issue one to start to get immersed.

This is an exciting story to read about and I'm sure to be a part of. I love the support that can come from the global community, even when a product is offered for free. Genius, and I hope this remains one of the great future case studies on how the internet changed the way we view commodities and how we sell.

I am an avid comic fan, and generally buy on reviews from my friends. In the past I have access to online versions of comics/graph novs and rarely find it enjoyable to read online but it does give me the 'taster' of what is in store.

I grew up reading comics and continued to read them into my early adulthood. I stopped for a decade yet being a participating member in the digital age, my enjoyment for comics was reinvigorated by the discovery of piracy groups 'releasing' comics as .CBZ and .CBR files and I found myself purchasing compilations of these comics in graphic novel format thereafter. (Piracy can create fans and fans will reward the object of their worship)

Which lead me to evaluating Flytrap #1 on this site, as I read news of your popularity increase on a technology site, clicked on the link, read about you and your work, decided to read Underground and then noticed an update today on this issue.

The dialogue and accompanying art illustrate the stress that's bearing down on this woman, who's so fooled herself into thinking she's 'okay' that she's attempting to justify it to her mother just as we all do. The speech bubbles are surrounded by so much chaos that it perfectly conveys the stress in her life. Great job, the both of you.

The story itself though, it doesn't appeal to me specifically. I personally have a similarly stressful life as this woman does, so I can relate; but it's not what I want to read in a comic. Give me some dry wit, human abstractions made into something tangible or some zombies and I'm happy. But reading about my own life in a comic without some escapism, I can't do it. This isn't criticism, rather, it's simply not my cup of tea. (It's not you, it's me kind of thing)

That being said, thanks for the sampling as I wouldn't have looked at it otherwise and I suggest you continue offering first issues for evaluation in the .cb's format as you're one of the few artists who've tapped into a potential source of fandom.

Jason A. Quest well if they don't sell to start with maybe they aint worth reading?

here in Sweden we had a singer who blamed piracy on his low sales, then a reporter on went on to the pirate bay and there where no people seeding or leaching his music cus nobody wanted to listen to him, piracy don't equate to sales.

most people would not have bought it but maybe they downloaded it then found out about you and then after that if they like it decides to buy it and then the next issue and so forth.

stopping piracy is contra productive to quote Dan Bull; "you loose potential fans and we lose respect for the fact that your desperate for cash"

dude, this is how comics should be done. I bought one because I rather not read it on my computer. Good job for being so awesome through the 4chan thing. That's why I bought one because this is the direction I want the industry to go. The manga industry used to be pretty cool about it as well but recently they reversed their stance...

I am a believer in that "Sharing is Caring". If you show the world that you care they will care back, increased sales. Even though I do not read comics because you showed that you care I will purchase your comic. Also because you have shown other artists that trying to sue people will not help yourself but alienate your customers.
@ The Devil, You can share your work. Independent movie makers and musicians do it all the time. The "Pirate Bay" is not all about theft but sharing.
